#1. by nature ART is documentation, documenting thoughts and ideas, images, interpretations of events, etc.. even if its simply to say, I like the color green, its documenting something so in turn it would be silly to condemn people for documenting history, because even though its not immediate or progressive, it has the same purpose as making art

#2. in documenting something it gives it a sense of authority. someone asks, what is mailart? you say your definition, they say.. what kinda crazy idea is that? you say.. well go look here and there is these books that you can read about it. when something is documented and in print it has an authority that sometimes appears even greater than experience. its just the way the world is.

#3. when someone asks, what is mailart? there should be places for them to find out, you cant be instantly experienced at something, you are either introduced by someone with experience (in which case that is where you find out) or you need to search it out for yourself (like I did). if there isn't the means to find that out then mailart becomes elitist. and personally i don't want to be part of something like that.

#4. just because something is defined a certain way doesn't mean that is the only way to do it. artist should know that, they are supposed to be able to color outside the lines. so I don't see how a definition can be restricting in an art community, it should probably encourage people to expand onto new things

#5. anyone should be able to do whatever work they want, and unless someone is saying, hey you, your art sucks. then really what others do should have little to no affect on what you do (unless it inspires you)
